Title: The Chico Mendes Extractive Reserve (CMER), A Pocket of Hope in Facing Increasing threats in the Brazilian Amazon
Abstract: Extractive Reserves (Resex) are a sustainable use conservation unit in which the maintenance of social, cultural and economic aspects of traditional peoples are compatibilized with environmental conservation. They are a legacy of Chico Mendes fight against Amazonia deforestation. One of the most emblematic Resex in Brazil is the Chico Mendes Extractive Reserve (CMER), due to its large size and location in eastern Acre, the most deforested part of the state. Some 30+ years since the creation of the CMER, the ideals that guided the Resex model are not so strongly held as before. The rise of deforestation, climate change and lack of financial security have changed the needs and priorities of extractivist communities threating the existence of CMER. However, CMER is a pocket of hope that cannot be lose due to its important role in mitigating deforestation in eastern Acre.
Bio: Sabina Ribeiro is a Fulbright Amazonia scholar visiting CU-Boulder until the end of March 2024. Her research aims to disseminate scientific knowledge about climate change causes, adaptation, and mitigation to traditional communities, mainly extractivists, to foster sustainable development and reduce social inequalities in the state of Acre in Brazil.
